Once the clocks go forward, it’s just a case of waiting for the weather to improve and the hills become a beautiful post working day playground.
Late April brought a long spell of settled (if occasionally cold) sunny days, and we got out on three of our favourite routes.
Helvellyn from Swirls Car Park
A bit of a slog up to the summit but picking this time of day means it’s often empty.
Down is usually via Whiteside or Whelpside.
Clough Head
Our local hill, with three varying routes up.
We usually also use one of these three for the descent to make a loop, but for a more adventurous route home, we head down Fisher’s Wife’s Rake.
Glenderaterra Valley
Between the Wainwright hills of Blencathra and Lonscale Fell, a u-shaped track clings to the flanks of the valley.
With not much ascent, this is good for running or an easier hike. It also makes a good low level route on those low cloud, high wind days.
